Mr. L, an 85 year young gentleman when Alternative Home Health began providing assistance to him in 1999. Mr. L’s family was very much involved with him, but lived out of state and were not available to give him the assistance that was needed at that time. Although Mr. L was fairly independent, his vision was failing. He needed additional supervision and assistance with meals and errands.
Over the past five years, Mr. L has become legally blind and his health has deteriorated. While the agency originally provided hourly care, a home health aide now provides Live-in assistance. The home health aide, Lise, has not only acted as a liaison for the family, but has become an active part in Mr. L’s daily life. Lise assists him with all activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing and ambulation.
The two plan meals together and frequently go on outings in the community. Lise takes Mr. L to his medical appointments and then communicates with the office and family to notify of any changes in his routine.
In addition to the Home Health Aide, a Registered Nurse from Alternative Home Health Care prepares medication for Mr. L on a weekly basis, due to his inability to see. This allows the Home Health Aide to assist Mr. L and make sure that the correct dose of medication is being administered.
Although he is not as active as in previous years, Mr. L remains in his home of many years and is an active and integral part of his group of friends. Mr. L’s health has stabilized to the point that he is able to travel each year to see his family. Mr. L recognizes that his Home Health Aide has enabled him to remain as independent as possible versus creating a sense of dependency on her.
They are truly a TEAM!
